Weekiwachee River

Osprey thumbnailThe Weekiwachee River is a 7.5-mile spring-fed river with a headwater spring that has been partially developed into a water park. Here you may find one of Florida's most unique inhabitants, the Weekiwachee mermaid! The "mermaids" are really trained entertainers performing underwater ballets for the delight of tourists and visitors.

The majority of the Weekiwachee River's flow originates from the Weekiwachee Springs complex, a first-magnitude spring that has an average discharge of 172 cubic feet per second. That's 111 millions of gallons of water per day! Several smaller springs also add to the river's flow. In some areas of the downstream portion of the river, the river has been dredged and channelized for riverfront homes and businesses. Because these canals are closer to the coast, they are under the tidal influence of the Gulf of Mexico.
